Match Preview: Colne FC v Maine Road

Colne FC return to league action on Tuesday evening as Maine Road make the trip to the DM Pies Stadium in the North West Counties Football League First Division North. The fixture is scheduled for Tuesday 11 August, with a 7:45pm kick-off.

After the disappointment of last week’s postponed home fixture against Darwen FC, the Reds will be looking forward to getting back in front of their own supporters and building on the momentum gained from Saturday’s excellent 3-0 away victory at Garstang in the Edward Case Cup.

Goals from Joshua Talks, Miles Storey and Corey Stacey secured a confident cup win on the road, giving Colne a timely lift ahead of another important midweek test. The performance showed both attacking quality and defensive discipline, and the challenge now is to carry that same level into league action.

With Colne making seven changes to the starting XI at Garstang, there is also likely to be a fierce battle for places ahead of Tuesday night. Several players took their opportunity at the weekend, and that competition within the squad can only be a positive as the Reds look to build consistency during a busy August schedule.

Tuesday’s visitors arrive with plenty of intrigue around them. Maine Road endured a difficult campaign last season and were relegated from the division, only to be handed a reprieve following FA and league restructuring over the summer. As a result, they remain in the First Division North, but this is expected to be a very different Maine Road side from the one that finished last season.

With new management, new players and a fresh start, Colne will know there is little value in reading too much into last year’s league table. Maine Road will be determined to make the most of their second chance at this level and will see the new campaign as an opportunity to reset and prove they belong in the division.

They will also arrive in East Lancashire in good spirits after an impressive 4-0 home win over AFC Blackpool at the weekend. Jack Pearce, Lewis McGill, Mason Beard and Mamudu Touray were all on the scoresheet, giving Maine Road a strong boost before their visit to the Reds.

For Colne, the focus will be on turning positive performances into points. The opening league defeat to Woolton was a frustrating start, but Saturday’s cup win at Garstang provided a strong response. Now the Reds have the chance to take that confidence into a home league fixture and kick-start their league campaign.

Supporters can expect a competitive midweek contest, with both sides having reason to feel optimistic. Maine Road arrive refreshed, reshaped and buoyed by a strong weekend result, while Colne will be aiming to make home advantage count and build on their cup success.
