Colne 1 Holker OB 1
Colne came from behind to grab a share of the points in a grandstand finish against Holker Old Boys at the DM Pies Stadium on Tuesday night. The Reds had trailed the visitors since the nineteenth minute and despite controlling most of the second half an equaliser always looked elusive until top scorer Barney Wiggin came up with the goods ten minutes from time.
In the opening stages, both sides looked to attack and Matthew Roberts shot wide of the Colne goal from a half chance. At the other end, Jamie Walker provided an inviting cross from the right wing but Wiggin headed wide from a good chance. Walker continued to open up the visitors defence linking with Saul Guffogg on the right wing.
But after 19 minutes, it was Holker who took the lead when Colne failed to clear the danger from an attacking run into their goalmouth and Nathan Reid fired home from close range as a half clearance fell to him.
As Colne looked for a reply, Jack Banks made a good attacking run but his low shot was comfortably saved by keeper Harrison Round. And Finley Denning saw his shot blocked in the penalty area after a good build-up. On the half hour, Colne keeper Harry Turner made a vital save when he turned the ball wide with his outstretched foot as Ryan Fagan's shot was bound for the bottom corner of the Reds goal.
As the second half began, Colne pushed forward with Ben Horne providing some good crosses from the left wing into the visitors' area. But Colne's threat increased when Guffogg moved up into the attack alongside Wiggin on the hour and the pair began to create some clear chances.
Walker curled a shot just over the angle from Tristan Fitzpatrick's cross after a good build-up after 75 minutes and Colne had loud claims for a penalty waved aside by the referee when Walker appeared to brought down by two defenders in the Holker area.
Holker still threatened at the other end and a penetrating run by Luke Davey produced a shot across the Colne goalmouth in a breakaway.
But the Reds were building momentum with every fresh attack and stretching the visitors' defence to breaking point. On 80 minutes, Luke Stowe's pass was helped on by Guffogg for Wiggin to go clear in the Holker area and he finished with a clinical shot past the keeper and into the far corner of the net to level scores at 1-1.
Colne pushed forward looking for a winner with Holker defending desperately and Josh Talks headed just wide of the far post from Stowe's free kick. And on the stroke of full time, Walker's cross fell beautifully for Stowe who hit a 25 yard piledriver only to see Round made a great save to push the ball wide of goal.
